Back pain can be caused by sitting, standing, doing nothing or repetitive activities done with poor body mechanics. Back pain affects all ages and sadly, 85 percent  of the U.S. population suffers from back pain. It’s the second most common reason for seeing a doctor in the US, followed by coughs and other respiratory infections.

Yoga naturally helps strengthen and lengthen your spine and improves your back’s alignment, which can often be at the root cause of persistent back pain for those of us who sit at a desk all day.

In fact, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicinechronic back pain sufferers who practiced yoga on a regular basis were half as likely to need prescription pain medication or over the counter treatments for their pain as non-yogis.

In this workshop, we will review the basic functional anatomy of the spine, discussing the most common back injuries, and we will learn what yoga postures help to improve the overall health of your spine.  The workshop will conclude with an active practice focused on creating a healthier, happier back.

Meg Gray is a licensed Physical Therapist with 15 years of experience, as well as a yoga teacher.  She has treated patients of all ages, all diagnoses, in a variety of settings.  She is also available for one-on-one private lessons incorporating her physical therapy background into a custom yoga practice specific to each student's needs and goals.

In this two-hour workshop we will explore some of the basic postures, breathing and meditation techniques that make up the practice of Hatha/Vinyasa yoga. Students will leave with a basic understanding of proper alignment and technique, and will be prepared for most beginner and all level classes. Yoga is appropriate for just about anyone. You don't need to be flexible or be able to quiet the mind. You simply need the desire to show up and do your best. This workshop is perfect for people new to the practice of yoga as well as for more seasoned students who want to review the basics.

If the idea of self-practice feels overwhelming for you, this 2 hour intro workshop will prepare you for an easy entry into a yoga method that can transform your life!For many people who are new to yoga or don’t know the Ashtanga series by memory, self-practice might seem scary. No need to worry, Mysore style self-practice is for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners.
The only requirement is a willingness to learn!

We will cover:

The fundamental techniques of breath, bandhas and drishti used in the ashtanga practice.

What actually happens in a mysore style class and what to expect.

We will run through the beginning postures of the sequence in detail.

Each student will be given personalised instruction on how far to go so they know exactly what to do when they attend mysore class.

Ashtanga yoga is meant to be learnt 'Mysore-style', (self practice) as taught in Mysore, the town in South India where this practice originated. The student will learn and then memorise the sequence in increments, steadily improving as they practice.

Mysore classes are for students of all levels, from beginners through to advanced, with various levels of students practicing side by side in the same class.

Each student will get individual guidance, adjustments and instruction from the teacher as needed.

This retreat is for yogis of all levels who are looking for a chance to infuse their time on the mat with breath-taking scenery and deep belly laughs on repeat. 

Spend 6-days and 6-nights at the praised Xinalani Eco-Chic Resort, a beach-front destination dripping with lush emerald jungle and endless ocean views. Both bedrooms and yoga spaces are open-air, immersing you in nature and ensuring you never miss a sunset.
