what is mysore yoga?

The Mysore style of yoga is a particular way of teaching yoga within the Ashtanga Yoga tradition as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the southern Indian city of Mysore.  The class is not "led" as a whole but rather "open" - meaning all instruction is one-on-one within the group class setting - and you have a flexible start time!

Students practice their own portion of the Ashtanga sequence of asanas at their own pace.  The teacher assists each student individually by giving physical adjustments & verbal instruction.

There are six sequences of postures in the Ashtanga system. Students begin their practice on the Primary Series, and many spend their entire life working on these postures. Some students will move on to later sequences, across many years of practice. 

Most Mysore students practice daily, and we ask students to commit to coming at least 2-3x/week.  It is appropriate for all levels and all abilities - because it is taught directly to you in the tradition of parampara (succession of teachers and students).  Expect lots of individual attention working with one dedicated teacher who knows your name, understands your practices including your strengths, goals and challenges.  

Since this class has a flexible start time, enter the studio when you like and leave when your practice is complete within the scheduled time, but please discuss with the instructor how much time you should allow yourself to complete your practice.

Krista studied with Sharon Gannon and David Life, earning a 300-hour Jivamukti Yoga certification in 2010, and delved into the world of vinyasa flow through Seane Corn’s teacher training intensive in 2012. She continued her education, completing another teaching certification through Kathryn Budig and Gina Caputo's highly transformative 200-hour Aim True Teacher Training. Currently, she practice ashtanga yoga which she learned from her teachers, the Ashtanga Dispatch duo, Jen René and Peg Mulqueen.

The studio is open for mysore during the following hours:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 6:00-7:45 AM

  • Monday evenings:  7:15-8:45pm - Starting 8.13.18

Students are invited to start their practice at any time during our mysore hours, though please discuss with Krista how much time you should allow yourself to complete your practice.  Krista will be present in the room to assist students with hands on assists and verbal direction.
